Your donation to Collegiate Academy Crew can be made tax-deductible--talk to a coach about how!
The following items are on the team's wish list. Some of these items are essential and some would be nice to have.
Products are priced and linked (where possible).
If you'd like to gift any of these items directly to the team, please talk to a coach. We would be incredibly grateful!
We will also happily put your name (or a custom message approved by the coaches) on any equipment donated. Put your name on an erg or a cox box that will be used for years to come!
If you have item-specific fundraiser ideas, we're all ears! One example: donors "adopted" oars and put their names on them.
Nielsen-Kellerman CoxBoxes are essential to our sport! These devices connect to the speaker system in our boats, allowing the coxswain to talk to the rowers (giving essential commands like starting and stopping). They also track metrics like our rate and strokes per minute.
We don't always have enough coxboxes to go around and ours are older (secondhand) models that have logged many hours of use.
About $1100/each new,
$800/each used (when available)
Our team primarily trains on rowing ergometers when we practice indoors.
We currently only have 9 ergs for the entire team, making it tricky to structure practices so that everyone gets an adequate turn. Our ergs are secondhand and most of them have long eclipsed their projected useful lifespan. This is a high priority need for our team! (If you have one collecting dust, we will gladly put it to good use!)
Concept2 is the gold standard for rowing ergometers. (We cannot use other brands/types.)
About $1000 new,
$850 gently used
Our ergs are older models, but Concept2 is a great company and allows users retrofit newer screens to older models. The newer screens facilitate collecting more data points and include bluetooth connection for stat tracking. **These are model-specific, talk to a coach if you plan to purchase.**
About $185 new (need 6),
unavailable used
Our ergs come to us secondhand and have many, many meters logged. Regular maintenance is key to ensuring we have them in service for as many meters as possible. Concept2 sells almost every individual part of their ergs so that uses can make repairs and refurbish them.
Each erg needs unique parts based on the model and service status--talk to a coach about purchasing these items.
About $50/erg to replace wear parts
We buy our rowing shells used from other teams. We hope to expand and update our fleet as finances allow.
Our fleet is comprised of boats for 4 rowers and a coxswain or 8 rowers and a coxswain ("fours" and "eights").
We would love to purchase some smaller boats (single sculls rowed by one person or doubles rowed by two rowers in a pair). Prices listed are estimates.
Single: $4000 (used)
Double: $8000 (used)
Four+: $15,000 (used)
Eight: $20,000 (used)
Our oars came to us secondhand with many previous hours of use on them. The handles wear over time, the fiberglass shafts degrade and delaminate, and blade designs are updated to be more efficient in the water.
Used set of 8: ~$1000
New pair of 2: $800
Our coaching launches each have a singular paddle. In an emergency, we will need to punt ourselves along the bottom of the bay, like a much less dignified gondolier.
Upgrade our launches to TWO paddles each!
About $75/pair (need 2)
Coach Brendan keeps our launch motors running and we are so grateful for that! Like all our equipment, these have many years and hours of use on them, as we are their second owners.
A newer, more powerful outboard would facilitate one of our goals--keeping up with a fast 8+! Our top boats row too fast for the coaches to keep up!
About $3000 new
Our launches get heavy and we currently have one trailer/dolly to move them on wheels. Adding a second will make getting launches in and out of the boathouse much easier!
When we move boats around or need to put them guts-up to work on them, they go in these folding slings. We are currently a couple pairs short.
$189 new (need 2)
We'd like to put a DIY "Kippy Kit" in each coaching launch. These bags, named after a coach who drowned after her launch engine failed on the Schuykill River, include these saftey basics:
Weathermax Safety Kit Bag: $129/ea (need 3)
Floating, waterproof first aid kit: $32/ea (need 3)
50' throw line: $22/ea (need 4)
Emergency blankets: $12/10 (need 4)
Air horns: $15/2 pack (need 2)
Our coaches currently share one working slim profile life preserver. While PA law only requires life preservers at certain times of year, even the best swimmer can't swim if they are unconscious. We hope to outfit each coach with their own life preserver.
The boathouse needs an updated, replenished first aid kit. This one mounts on the wall for easy/conspicuous access.
Proper technique is the best way to avoid blisters on land (heels/feet) and in the water (hands). That said, rowers sometimes need tape for particularly bad blisters--especially during spring training, when we do a high volume of work on the water.
Corrections in technique are typically easy to understand and difficult to master. Kinesio tape gives athletes physical feedback to correct things like poor posture.
Performing routine maintenance using this kit will extend the life of our CoxBoxes.
Water-resistant megaphones make coaching safer (siren/light features) and easier on coaches (no yelling over the outboard motor). These are rechargeable.
Boats with overhang off the end of our trailer require these safety flags.
A new racing shell is thousands of dollars; a new boat strap is about $10.
Many of our straps have seen better days. Frayed, worn, and weathered straps are more likely to fail. Our strap supply needs to be updated and old ones should be retired so our boats can be safely transported.
Coxswains carry basic boat tools (wrenches, sometimes a screwdriver) because on-the-water adjustments are common. Mishandled tools sink very quickly, so this multi-tool wrench attached to a floating keychain is ideal.
Lineups change daily and it's tough to sit down and find out you need to put your size 8 feet into size 11 shoes! These sandals fit sizes 7-11 and are more adjustable than fixed sizing shoes. Many of the shoes in our fleet are worn out and should be replaced as we are able.
