Who can join Collegiate Academy Crew?
Any student in grades 9-12 in Erie County, PA is welcome to join! We hope to add programming for middle schoolers in the future.
Is this Collegiate Academy's team?
Collegiate Academy Crew is a club activity based out of NWPA Collegiate Academy. It is not a school-based sport.
Does the school district fund the team?
Collegiate Academy Crew does not receive any funding from the school district or school, itself.
Do I have to know how to swim?
No! We like our rowers to stay in the boats. That said, we do a swim test to ensure we know who is capable of swimming and treading water proficiently in the event of an emergency. Motorized coaching launches (stocked with life jackets) follow all boats closely and are immediatley available to retrive any rower who ends up in the water.
How much does this cost?
There are costs associated with each season of participation (dues, uniform, spring training camp, etc); we fundraise to offset these costs. Cost will never prevent an otherwise interested and committed student from being on our team! Come to a rower or parent meeting or contact the coaches for more info.
Do we fundraise?
Yes! We have fundraisers to help our families offset the cost of participation. If cost is an issue, please talk to our coaches--we never want cost to keep an athlete from being on our team.
When is the season?
Rowing traditionally has active racing during both the fall and spring. The spring season is the primary racing season. We train year-round: on the water in the fall, indoors for the winter, and on the water again as soon as weather permits in the spring.
Can I do other sports?
Yes! We encourage cross-training and will work with you to balance the demands of participating in rowing and another sport. That said: we need rowers to be available for practices and races in the spring season, so you cannot do rowing and a second sport during that portion of the year.
Can I do other activities?
Of course! The caveat: it's not really possible to balance the spring musical and spring crew season (practice and rehearsals overlap). If your activity or club will cause an ongoing conflict with crew practice, please talk to the coaches. We will work with you for fall/winter conflicts but require all rowers to be available to practice and race with us during the spring.
When can novices join?
Almost any time! We welcome anyone interested in the sport to come try out a practice (or a few!). We welcome anyone interested to shadow us and see what the crew team is all about at any time! That said: we cannot accommodate novices joining once our spring season is underway.
Can I join as a novice if I'm not in 9th grade?
Yes! We are happy to have novices from all grades, including seniors.
When & where is practice?
We practice at NWPA Collegiate Academy when we are indoors and at the boathouse on Presque Isle Bay when we are on the water. Practice times vary, talk to a coach for specifics.
How long are the races?
Fall racing is about 5,000 meters and takes about half the day (more if there's travel involved). Spring racing is about 1500 meters and takes about half the day, as well (again, longer if there's travel or we have boats making finals scheduled into the afternoon).
Do I need to have experience?
Nope! We will teach you everything you need to know. Just show up with a good attitude!
When & where is practice?
We practice in the Erg Room when we are indoors at NWPA Collegiate Academy. We row out of the Larson Boathouse on Presque Isle when we are on the water.
How do I get from my school to the boathouse?
Carpool!
Is ther spring training camp?
We have done spring training camps and intend to offer this again in the future. We fundraise to cover as much of the costs as possible.
I have other questions...
